An aunt work is never done :P

While waiting for the fermentation process for my dyeing experiments I managed to make 3 hats for the soon-to-come baby. Not my baby, my brother's.
Ravelry was good to me and I found some nice and easy basic patterns that I customized to create the following 3 models. And I discovered something: if you don’t have a baby to try on or to use as model, try a yarn ball J

Crocheted slippers with felt soles

End of the year, the magical period when work seems to just pile up and free time gets less and less and less.. :/ That is my story and the reason for the silence on the blog lately. But I did work on some projects and now I find the time to post about one easy, cozy and fun project, perfect for this time of the year: crocheted slippers. With felt soles, to be more precise :P The ones you see in the video tutorial are made for my husband who chose the color combination. He wanted a fun pair of slippers :) Well, he has them now!

My first hat

Like the title of the post sais - I made my first hat with a pattern created by me. Because I have a weird shaped head and I wanted something custom made for it :P So I had to create my hat from scratch. The experience I had with making crocheted dolls helped. And I also learned a new stitch: the front post double crochet, which sounds more complicated than it is. All in all: a good project with a nice warm hat as a result. Just in time for the winter :)

Same pattern in two variations

Did you ever crochet in back loop or front loop? I did not until now but then I tried and I discovered that the textured effect that you can get is quite nice. I experimented with half double crochet (hdc) in back loop only and it looks a bit like knit which I thought that was pretty cool.
Here are two items I crocheted using the hdc in back loop stitch: two cowls, a smaller and a larger version. Just to give you an idea, for the small cowl I chained 31 cm of chains and for the larger cowl I chained 55 cm. Then I worked the pattern - for the small cowl I worked till I had around 46 cm and for the large cowl 88 cm. Easy to do in front of the TV, just for some relaxation in between more complicated projects.

Father's Day

I must admit, in Romania there is no father's day. I don't know why, probably the whole idea of fatherhood is not so important that part of the world. But here in The Netherlands is kinda a big day so I had to do something to mark this moment. I made a Crew Crochet Cap for my father in low, following a very detailed video tutorial. You can find the video tutorial here. The only thing different from the original pattern was the inside lining that I added. All in all, I am happy with how it turned out, plus the video tutorial was a pleasure to follow, I even learned some neat tricks. I just hope that tomorrow the recipient of the gift will like it. (PS: i did not had any cap display so for the photos I improvised :P ).

Mother’s Day

People celebrate Mother’s Day today. Not everywhere, in Romania Mother’s Day is celebrated on 8th of March.  But here in The Netherlands today is the day. And to mark the occasion, I learned a new stitch: Solomon’s Knot, also called the lover’s knot. Very easy to make if you get the hang of it. What I made using this stitch? Something special for someone special: a wrap made from mohair for my mother in law :)

Fibonacci scarf

Fibonacci was a great guy. Mathematician. He introduced some very cool stuff to the western science: Arabic numbers and also a sequence of numbers that is named after him. It goes like this: 1 1 2 3 5 8 etc.  The trick is that each number in the sequence is the sum of the previous two numbers. What is cool about this Fibonacci sequence is that is the most famous sequence in nature! It's everywhere (see this video from ScienceShow for more info). So why not also in a crochet project? Like this scarf I made for those warm yet windy Dutch spring days. I used 4 colors and the Fibonacci sequence to control the number of rows from each color. 240 stitches long and worked only in filet mesh stitch: my Fibonacci scarf :)
